Learn Thai Massage With Buddhist Concepts – Useful Or Not?

How much Buddhist influence is there in Thai Massage?

How much Buddhism is there in Thai Massage?

Sometimes the question comes up if Thai Massage includes or requires meditation, Buddhist prayers, or Buddhist concepts.

The answer to all three is no, it does not require any of these.

However some people feel attracted to these elements, and they add them because it feels right to them.

Typically in Thai Massage schools in Thailand, teachers and students recite a prayer to the historical founder of Thai Massage, Shivaka Komarpaj, in the morning. In the Western world, this is hardly ever done, and it is certainly not necessary.

Thai Massage training in its cultural setting

You can be an excellent Thai Massage therapist without any Buddhist concepts. However, some Buddhist concepts are quite compatible with a Thai Massage therapist’s mindset.

The same goes for meditation. You certainly don’t need to meditate to do Thai Massage. However, a meditative approach to Thai Massage feels quite good, as I know from personal experience.

Christianity and Buddhism in Thai Massage

What if you are a Christian and don’t want to alter your religious beliefs or practices? Are you concerned that a Buddhist influence might interfere with your beliefs?

The good news is that Buddhism is more like a lifestyle or life philosophy than a strict religion. There is no holy book, and there is not even a god.

Buddhists just strive to follow the teachings of Buddha, a spiritual teacher. He instructed his followers to live a life of harmony, kindness, non-violence, and compassion. It’s hard to argue with that, no matter what your religious beliefs are.

Here is a related scenario. Millions of Westerners have embraced yoga practice without becoming Hindus. Similarly you can – if you like – add a little Thai Buddhist cultural flavor to Thai Massage without interfering with your Christian beliefs.

So – it’s entirely up to you and your preferences. You can be a good Thai Massage therapist either way – with Buddhist concepts or without.

Can Thai Massage Benefit From Thai/Buddhist Concepts?

In my opinion, the Thai cultural aspects do enrich Thai Massage. After all, Thai Massage does come from a Buddhist country. Personally, not only have I spent 20 years of my life in Thailand, but I am also married to a Thai woman.

Thai Massage online training with a rich cultural background

That’s the reason why we have included a section about Thai culture and values in our Complete Thai Massage training course. It’s not necessary to learn Thai Massage, but it adds something to it that you might find valuable and interesting.

It adds a flavor to Thai Massage training that you don’t get from just learning the techniques. It’s a bit like armchair traveling to Thailand. Many of our students like and enjoy this addition.

But if all you care about are the techniques, that’s fine too. You choose what you want to focus on. We provide the options you can choose from in our academy, and then it’s up to you what you want to focus on.
