I have been trained to do Ashiatsu massage so I actually have bars on the ceiling for balance. It was nice to see a little foot work there. I practiced the tenique on my daughter who is about 90 pounds. So she couldn’t tallerate a lot of pressure. But she did give me a helpful hint. When I was working on her calf with my fore arm she said her knee hurt. I was so focused on everything else I didnt even notice that i did have her knee supported correctly. So I made the adjustment and it worked out great. That is why I always work on my family first they are overly honest with me.
Family is a great place to start practicing. My model weighs about 100 pounds as well, but if you are sensitive you can use all body parts on even the lightest person. Actually it is good to practice power techniques on light persons because that will teach you how to use the technique with a lot of control. Stomping on a 200 pound guy is easy, but using foot, elbow or forearm techniques on a 90 pound person requires much greater skill and control.
Well, this is my issue with massage tables. They don’t allow you as much access to the client as you get on a floor mat. Many techniques can be done on a table, but there are some limitations which we have to live with when working on a table.
However there are plenty enough techniques which can be done on a table. Sometimes there are certain trade-offs, like when doing a Swedish-style massage on a table, you lose the advantage of full access on a floor mat. But you still enhance your table work a lot with this course material.
Table massage is the standard for oil massage in the western world. Here in Thailand oil massage is mostly done on a floor mat just like Thai Massage.
When you ask about rotator cuff issues, this is hard to answer without knowing and feeling the specifics of the particular issue. After all ‘rotator cuff’ refers to a group of four muscles and their tendons which can have all kinds of problems like stiffness, tendinitis, bursitis, frozen shoulder or even tears. They are often caused by extreme sports activities which involve lifting the arm or swinging it.
I do have a client this week that had rotator cuff surgery and had a tear twice. He is working on being able to golf.
it has been great to use these skills on my clients each day. I did have a client this morning that came in with complaint of shoulder and calf tension. I was able to use my forearms on her calves and she loved it. I feel that it was perfect pressure for her body size. She is small and only wanted medium pressure. One the other hand my other client I had is a runner and he completely over did it this weekend. I used my knee with him on his legs especially the tighs and it worked out great.
I never knew that in Thailand that even with oil massage they use a mat. Do these use tables for any type of massage
I think this is my favorite video so far. I think the majority of my clients come in with some kind of back pain. I liked how you showed how to transition from one technique to the other by rocking. The knees going from the glutes down is going to be a great skill to have for my clients that like the Ashiatsu massage for the back but the foot pressure is too much for their glutes and legs.

In Thailand there are some massage shops and especially spas where they use massage tables. However they are not adjustable tables like in western countries, but they are generally low, fixed height, solid tables which cannot be adjusted, basically a wooden platform. They are mostly much wider than the tables which are used in the western world. However in most places they just work on the floor for any kind of massage.

I just watched a you tube video and saw one of the tables you are talking about. It almost looked like 2 tables put together and lowered all the way down. I just noticed that the school I use to go to is selling thai massage matts. I think I might get one. Although some of the techiniques I am learning I am using some in my regular massage they are working really well.
Now that I am on #6 I have noticed may of the techinques repeat but used on a different body part. It has been nice to keep seeing the same thing over and over and be able to practice it over and over. The main thing that stood out with this video is working the 2 lines on the back. Which I was not aware of. Mostly have learned about the rector muscles that you mentioned which I do do. Then I usually (with tradional Massage) swoop over to sides and come up. But I never really worked tat “2nd line” wow what a different! I feel like it releases more tension aslo….thank you
I like angled leg technique for really getting into the glutes. I have clients that really need extra work in this area. I have not tried sitting on the thigh yet but I am excited to try this one as well. Now when the client is sitting upward and I know you talk alot about not disconeccting and flow…would this be best to do last. Also when you they are sitting up what other techniques would be good to go with that one.
The “sitting on the leg” technique is very powerful. Once you know how to do it correctly, it is also very easy to do, and clients really enjoy it. It has a deep warming and relaxing effect on the leg. However it is not something you would do on small or very skinny clients.
There are many more techniques in the sitting position. In this course I only showed the ones which do not require the use of hands at all. In Thailand the sitting position is normally done at the very end of the session. I don’t like this so much. Instead I prefer to end my sessions with the client in the supine position with some head and face massage.
Here in Thailand pretty much all therapists end their sessions with the sitting position. That’s the very first thing I changed when I started out with Thai Massage. They do some head and face massage, and then they do all the sitting techniques at the very end. That never felt right to me, and I have never done that. I got a lot a great feedback from clients who love the head and face massage in the end of the session. However I cannot imagine anyone gushing about how great the sitting techniques felt in the end.
