Module1

I enjoyed this module and the information you gave on Thai massage and the benefit of the quality of touch. In my past and working with massage I often would take on my clients energies and go home with them. While this gave me an advantage of feeling what they felt and how best to help them, it also drained me. Through my years of experience with massage I have learned how to differentiate my energy and theirs, this is still a work in progress for me. Being a yoga instructor has given me an advantage in some of these Thai positions however I have difficulty with balancing I have been practicing on my toes and notice how tight my left arch is. I love the thoughts of Thai being a healing art. I have always felt that doing massage was my art. I love that Thai massage is done on the ground, it helps me to feel more grounded in my practice. I often struggle with being grounded and opened in my lower chakras, my upper chakras tend to be more open. I love learning about the correct ergonomics, this often tends to be overlooked and I have found that through my years of practice and performing techniques wrong I have strained my own body and energy at times.

Module 2

When I first learned massage, we were taught tai Chi to help are bodies maintain proper body mechanics or ergonomics. Over the years of doing massage, I noticed that I allowed my body to become laxed with my ergonomics and this has led to straining my muscles. I love that this program starts with proper alignment. I performed the Chi Machine movement on my 13-year-old boy at first, he said it felt good but didn't feel any tingling in his body. I noticed that I was sitting with my legs to close together, when I moved my leg positioning the technique became easier. I then tried the technique on my husband. My husband is over 6'3 to my 5'5 I noticed I began using too much of my muscles in my arms to get his hips to swing. He reported feeling relaxed but not anything else, I didn't perform this technique for longer than 45 seconds and noticed my arms where tense and getting tired. I watched the video a second time and realized that I didn't have his feet at the mid-point of my thighs and his feet where more to the outside of my thigh then the inside. When I tried again, I was able to perform this technique without strain in my arms and was able to do it for 2 minutes without my arms getting tired. My husband said that his back felt warm and relaxed when I finished the technique.

Hi Staci, welcome to the Complete Thai Massage certification program. Please take a moment and familiarize yourself with our certification checklist to make sure that it is all correctly organized:

Certification Checklist

As a yoga teacher you are already a step ahead when it comes to Thai Massage. Actually about one third of our students are yoga teachers.

You are off to a good start. The Chi Machine takes a while to learn correctly. By re-watching the video you figured out what was straining you. Re-watching the videos will give you insights that you had missed the first time around. Many of out students made this observation. It is almost impossible to retain all the information by watching a video once.

Try the Chi Machine on someone else as well, if possible. Sooner or later you will find that it takes very little effort to do, when done correctly. There are some people who never feel the tingling, but the majority do. So that's the goal and the indication that you are doing it correctly.

Module 3

I practiced the feet technique on several different people. My young son who has feet problem reported that I made his feet feel relaxed. I had trouble adjusting myself on the technique where we put the leg under the other persons and twist push twist pull, my daughter said It felt like I was pushing her leg up into her hip. I feel like I need a little more help understanding what I'm doing wrong. I feel comfortable with the first part of the foot technique. The first couple of times I performed the press, squeeze and turn technique on my son he said it felt like he could feel my body moving and it wasn't very relaxing. Now that I have broken it apart several times, I feel much more fluid with the technique. I am feeling more relaxed with the positioning of my body on the mat but am still working with the fluidity of my body movements from one technique to another.

"I feel like I need a little more help understanding what I'm doing wrong."  -  It's not that you are doing it wrong. It just takes some time to find the rhythm and the fluidity. It's a circular move. Don't look at it as pushing into the hip, but as a way to open up the hip joint by compression and decompression in a circular fashion. You can also experiment with putting less pressure into the upward move of the circle.

Module 4

I enjoyed conceptually learning the foot massage techniques. It made it much easier for me to remember the motions when paired with the range of motion of the foot. It took me several practice sessions to flow easily in and out of the transitions from one foot to the next. I noticed that I could very easily start to have bad body mechanic form. I noticed myself not using my whole body on several occasions when massaging the sole of the foot, I just used my arm strength on a couple of occasions. My client said it felt the same to them both times, but I noticed the difference in my arms. when I massaged the outside of my daughters' feet, she told me the sight was tender.

Yes, even if the client doesn't notice, you owe it to yourself to work with good body mechanics and body weight. Your body and your career will thank you. Smile

Module 5

Learning the leg warm up I had a little trouble with my body mechanics again. It appeared so easy when I watched you do it on the video. My son told me when I got to his inner thigh it tickled a lot, almost to the point that I couldn't touch his leg. Do I need to add a different pressure? I realize this reaction is probably because the muscle is tight. When you hook the persons foot or leg with your leg or foot it looks like you are using the opposite leg, is this correct? I must be honest I realize how bad my body mechanics have become in my massage practice. After so many years of doing the same massage, I have become lazy with my body and am feeling it in my hands. I love all the self-help videos you offer. Thank You Staci Love

I don't know how old your son is, but it has been my experience that children tend to be more ticklish than adults, and the inner thigh is one of those areas. However in my practice, this has rarely been an issue. If you have someone who is really ticklish, you can either try using more pressure, or, if that doesn't work, just skip it in this case.

I am not sure which technique you are referring to when you ask about 'hooking the person's leg'. At which minute in the video is this technique?

Module 5

I went back to the video, and it was at 6 mins when we were learning to stabilize the leg with the foot. After rewatching the video and trying it on my daughter, I got it. It was actually much easier to practice on my daughter then my son.

Module 6

It was interesting to me that I had to practice the rocking technique on the leg several times before I relaxed, and it became easy and fluid. My son and daughter both loved the feel of the rocking when I finally relaxed my hands and allowed the leg to move gently. I really enjoyed using my forearm in this video. It was amazing to me how little effort that I felt like I needed to use to produce an effect on my clients. I was able to use more body weight on my son then daughter.

I also realized that when I first started using my forearm, I had reverted to using my muscles, my son brought this to my awareness and told me how much better it felt when I slowed down, relaxed and leaned in. Another interesting thing that I have become aware of. I have such an awareness with my hands but when using my forearm, it was more difficult for me to feel the clients body energy. This is a bit new to me, but I am sure it will come with more practice.

I am enjoying how much easier these techniques are on my body when I perform them right. I never realized how much I was using my own body strength. and muscles when I massaged before. When working on the outside Sen line with my forearm I had to play around with adjusting the leg several times before I got it right and it felt correct.

Module 7

I noticed how tight my left wrist was while performing the leg warm up, elephant walking and the butterfly technique. I hadn't noticed this till now. It took me several practice attempts to get the 45-degree angle correct and I am now feeling more comfortable with the technique. I am enjoying using my feet on the inside of the client's thigh, I definitely need more practice on this technique when I have a bigger client like my husband it is much harder for me. My son is so easy to work with and always gives great feedback. Again, I had a much easier time performing the hip stretch at 20.12minutes in the video, on my son. When I performed this with my husband, I had a harder time.

Module 8

I find when I conceptually learn these techniques it really helps me to remember them. I loved learning all the techniques for the calf muscle, my son had strained his calf several weeks ago. He said it felt amazing on his calf and how much more relaxed the muscle was when we finished. It took me several attempts to get the right positioning with my body when i performed the stretch on the hamstrings with my husband. I had an easy time with my son, but my husband is very stiff in the leg, and he is a lot bigger than me. My husband's hip muscle loosened much more after I used the rocking technique on him. Again, I had an easy time with the leg circles on my son but when I practiced on my husband it was more difficult, because of the difference in our sizes. I went back again and did the techniques on my husband that are used at the end of the video, where I bring my opposite leg up and use my forearm, it was amazing to see the difference for both me and him. My husband said the 2nd technique felt much better on him.

Working on much larger people is always more difficult, but it forces us to learn how to work with body weight and good body mechanics so that we get better leverage. A lot of the size and weight differences can be overcome in this way. But there is no question - working on a much larger and very stiff person is more challenging. Remember that you don't have to do all techniques on every person. The techniques are options to choose from, not mandatory sequences.

Module 8

I believe that is why it is taking me so long to get through all the modules, I am trying to perfect and learn all the moves before moving on. It is not the best for a stress-free life when you try to perfect everything. I thought by this age I would have learned!!

Maybe you should try to cut back a bit on the perfectionism and just focus on techniques that come to you easily. Then you have more fun and feel more progress. You can always come back to the not-so-easy ones later when you have built up more experience and confidence. Smile

Module 9

I am loving the hip stretches and am really enjoying myself and relaxing with the techniques. This has made such a difference in the feel of my massage, according to my son. I have been using the power of the stretch with softness of my hands with my clients. Focusing on my breath has really helped me to relax. I am learning to feel the difference in their muscles according to how they rate their comfort level during the stretches. I am often having to use the relaxed version of the stretches, most of my clients are not very flexible. My husband loved the spinal twist he said it really relaxed his lower back.

I am having trouble accessing any of the videos it keeps showing up that the videos do not exist. I am just checking; it may be because of my internet connection. I tried on my phone as well and I got the same response.

I tried it at our end, and they play just fine. So it might either be an internet issue, but it is also possible that Vimeo, the platform that hosts our videos, had an issue temporarily. I have seen that before.
