 module 1

One of the reasons  and interest in Thai massage, for me ,  is the physical approach in which you use your body weight and not your muscles.  This aspect of Thai massage is a technique that I was not aware of in any type of massages .  I am looking forward to this well- put together visual course!

I will be practicing the techniques on my son and daughter (they are not minding at all! 🙂 )

module 2

New term for me: ergonomics.   I have learned that The principles of ergonomics is the essential foundation of position and posture to give  an effective body Thai  massage .  Not only was I focused on the person receiving the massage , but kept me attentive on my posture as well.  My son thoroughly enjoyed the 'chi Machine' . He said that he felt a tingle throughout his body and my daughter also felt tingling and a warm sensation.  I was pleased to hear that, since I did not mentioned to them what 'they should be feeling'.  talked about it afterwards.

Hi Sandra, welcome to the Complete Thai Massage certification program!

You are right, this is a huge advantage in Thai Massage that you use your body much more effectively than in table massage where you always have to work from the side of the table, whereas in Thai Massage you can get right on top of people. This gives you more power with less effort.

I am impressed that you figured out the Chi Machine so quickly and got the exact results that are supposed to happen! Smile

So you have your kids to work on  - great. We have a lot of course members who got through the entire course with their children as practice partners. Generally they love it!

Also, just to make sure that everything is organized correctly, I always post our certification check list in the beginning of all threads. Please take a minute to look through the list.

Module 3

Aside from the feet connecting to many organs in our bodies, I consider our limbs/extremities to be fundamental to our everyday function.  The feet like our hands are always moving and working. Unfortunately, most of the time we don't take the time to give them the care they deserve! The techniques  taught on module 3 are techniques that I've been looking forward to learning.

 

the bend out of the foot was not easy for me.  I have small hands and I was trying my best to cover the bottom of the foot on the 1-2-3-2-1 steps.  braking the technique down into individual steps helped in achieving the massage.

module 4

Shama,

I really enjoyed the introduction of this lesson:  Isolating the techniques and transferring the knowledge to a situation where we can apply them- conceptual learning.  after the introduction, I was put at ease and my mind set was at  a different level. I relaxed, and took the time to do them slowly in order to learn the steps properly. 

I learned that I need to put the technique in my 'memory bank' and use the concept of what the technique is providing- health, alignment and relaxation.  

the foot relaxation where you lift with index fingers and 'shake up and down' does not flow easily for me.  I need to practice !!

The shake-up-and-down technique can take a while to learn because it is not a linear move - like press straight down here.

There is another section coming up where you will really enjoy the conceptual learning elements - that's the hip training section.

Don't worry too much about following the exact 1-2-3-2-1 system if you work on large feet and have difficulties reaching spots. Just do what you can with your hands. There are other ways of working on large feet which are easier, like with your forearm or elbow. You will learn more about working with these body parts later in the course.

Module 5

I had not thought about warm up and stretching, literally, as being 2 different things;  but thinking about it, I know that when I stretch in the mornings my body does not feel as flexible as how it felt the day before,and my movements need to considerably slower!  in essence, I need to warm them up!

I did something 'silly' to get the idea of the technique on squeeze, pull and roll- ( my kids weren't home) I filled a thick long hiking sock with stuffing and worked on the motion 🙂 . I was having trouble getting the movement down and this idea helped !

I like the idea that you can apply the same technique to different parts of the body.  this gives flexibility and freedom to move around.  Repetition,  as in everything we learn , is what will give me the confidence in this endeavor!  Thank you!

Do you realize that you had mistakenly posted your last comment in Orsolya Toth's thread? Surprised I moved it over for you to your thread.

I learned about the difference between warm up and stretching the very hard way. I did an exchange once with a Shiatsu practitioner, and she said that she wanted to do some “warm up” on me before she got started working on me.

However her idea of warm up was that she pulled me into a massive thigh adductor stretch by spreading my legs wide apart. This resulted in torn fiber in my adductor tendon which was extremely painful and took years to totally heal. This was NOT warm up, it was a massive stretch WITHOUT warm up. Big mistake! It was the opposite of how it’s supposed to be done and it was quite dangerous.

Moral of the story: Never start clients out with strong stretches without warming the muscles up first.
I never told this woman what she did to me because I did not want to embarrass her. Not sure if this was the right thing to do. Maybe I should have told her to make sure that she didn’t do this to anyone else.

Module 6

Leg warm-ups with the forearm in lieu of thumbs (at times) is extremely helpful. I had the flexibility to add and apply more weight if needed.  My son enjoyed the technique in which you massage the thigh by making a fist and grabbing your fist with the other hand.  He trains in karate and his muscles get tight doing 'horse stands; for minutes at a time.

Module 7

I enjoyed learning the positioning and alignment of the hip.  When you narrated and mentioned  

'if both feet have the same angle, then the hip is balanced" what exactly do you mean? is the best angle when the feet are relaxed and face outward?  One of my daughter's favorite is the elephant walk on the upper and lower calf.  Thank you!

Module 8

Learning the concept of 'the pie' in relation to the hip does help with visualisation as opposed to memorizing.  The hip pie stretch really helped my mom.  She felt the difference the following day.  Her hip and lower back didn't feel as tight as it has been feeling from doing her gardening. need to practice more Smile

Module 9

The elephant walk on the 'hip pie' made my 'client/son' 🙂 laugh. It tickled him but at the same time enjoyed the stretch nevertheless.  Some of the stretches, as you mentioned are 'strong', so I was very careful and gentle as I did it. I wanted to ask him for a feedback, but he had fallen asleep and all I got was a snore!! He was very relaxedSmile

Module 10

New information for me was the center of energy- the hara. need to read more about it. 

one of my favorite stretching techniques is the spiral twist for the lower back. I do a similar stretch daily but the technique shown on mod #10 surpasses the effectiveness than when I do it myself. The pressing of the opposite shoulder, while you twist, feels wonderful! ( showed my daughter first and then she tried it on me).  I get a bit confused on the right leg positions when I change sides.  Question- If you have 6 moves/ stretches, do you do them all on one side first? or do you change back and forth?

Regarding your question about the hip being balanced in module 7 - What I mean is that when the angle of the feet is approximately the same on both sides, then there is no restriction on one hip joint. However when one foot is angled up more, or less able to move to the same angle as the other foot, then this indicates that there is a restriction in the hip joint which prevents the foot from angling out.

Regarding your question in module 10 - generally you do one side first, and then the other.

Module 11 (1)

I welcomed this module with anticipation!.  Very beneficial seeing the flow of the techniques learned and the transitional positions from one side to the other

Module 11 (2)

This module on contraindications is definitely a must for all 'new learners'.  The phrase 'the less you know, the more careful you need to be' is a phrase I will take to heart.  Even when you think you know, one must still use precaution on techniques or procedures that are being used.  I witnessed an example of this situation when my dad experienced a mild stroke /TIA last week.  As he was recovering, the physical therapist started examining his extremities for balance and movement.  Not being aware of his less visible conditions like arthritis, she lifted his leg and began to bend and twist his leg to place it on top of the other leg. My dad shrieked in pain.  I interfered and told her that he had acute arthritis in his knees. Inexperience or experienced, as in this case, one must be aware of the client's physical condition.

That's a scary story. It sounds like the PT did not ask the right questions before starting the session. There is an entire module about how to go about that in this course (module 35).

module 12

 Achilles tendon- version 3.   on this particular stretch, when I had the person's leg on my shoulder, I didn't feel like I was doing any stretching nor did the person feel much one either.   I reviewed the notes and corrected my posture. Since I'm short, I needed to raise my body higher while lifitng his leg as well. I'm glad we have the scripts.  Thank you!

Module 13

In this module you stipulate the importance of asking the client how strong is a move on a scale from 1 to 10.  As previously mentioned, this is critical.  A lot of the  times when we are faced with a professional-  a  physical therapist, or a doctor, we feel intimidated by their 'titles'  and do not ask questions that pertain to our health. Therefore, It is so important for the professional who is treating the individual to ask questions and find out how the client is feeling.  

As you mentioned, the more relaxed you are and synced with yourself, we can pay more attention to the client.  Sometimes when you think the technique is very simple and mild, the person may make a sudden movement or a facial expression that indicates discomfort.  I have experience this and I need to be very sensitive to their body language.  Thank you for the suggestions on what to ask the client.

The hip joint scooping technique was a technique that was difficult for my kids to withstand for a long period of time- it was a ticklish sensation for them.  One of their favorite, though, was 'hip pie- 315 degree angle stretch.   It stretched their hips, leg and back.

Kids are infamous for being ticklish. However when an adult experiences pain in this spot from the stretch, and you relieve it with the scooping, ticklishness won't be an issue.

module 14

this module on hip rocking was very useful for me. Besides the stretching techniques learned,The information on never disconnecting  and the transition and shifting of our bodies  while massaging, was knowledge that I needed to be reminded of and learned .  The videos were very clear.  The half arch stretch with the knee bent was a bit uncomfortable for my son, due to a bit of lack on flexibility. therefore, I did not persist on that particular technique.  I continued with the rocking without bending the knee.
