Module 32

Side Position 4

Shoulder Work

Back when we did shoulder work in the prone position I noticed some of my partners had really tight shoulders and shoulder blades. In this module these shoulder techniques are perfect to help work on their shoulders. I remember you, Shama, told me that there would be some great shoulder techniques in side position. You weren’t kidding! I see how I could make a whole session out of only shoulder work. Learning all these techniques was overwhelming at first. I kept thinking “how can I fit this all into one session?”  Now I see that I don’t have to fit everything in. I see that the more I get to know my clients and the needs of their body I will be able to customize a session for them. As I work with my partners I am starting to request certain people for each module. For example I have been requesting my partners that have stiff and tight shoulders for the last few modules. At the beginning of the training I was just working on anyone. Now I have become more familiar with their bodies and their needs. I have been hand selecting who I want to practice on. This has been good for me because they are able to give me feedback in response to their tight body parts.

No, you don't have to fit all the shoulder work into one session - but you could, if you have a client who really wants and needs shoulder work. I have actually done sessions just on the shoulders. Granted, that doesn't happen a lot, but it is good to know, that - if need be - you are capable of doing that. And with all the techniques you know now, you are capable of doing a shoulders-only session.

Module 33

Sitting Position 1

In this module, I have found that seated techniques are quite lovely for both me and my partners. I feel like I have really great ergonomics with the seated techniques thus far. I love the back support with my knee, I also love the modification with the pillow between my knee and the clients back

The squeezing neck with palms technique feels really good. I also feel that supporting the client with my chest is very comforting for them. This support gives the client a sense of security. I also love how the breath of both me and the client sync up. Such a beautiful way to support the client as well as giving their neck a massage.

Learning Thai Massages I am realizing that we are offering more than just stretches. We are offering a space where our clients can come and feel safe and supported through touch and breath. This is such a powerful thing to offer. I am so grateful for all the knowledge you are sharing with me Shama!

Module 34

Sitting position 2

As we continue to study sitting position techniques, I see how intimate the positioning of my body to the clients body can become. At the moment I am only practicing on bodies that I feel very comfortable and safe around and I am having no problem using these techniques, I could see how with a stranger these techniques might be a little bit uncomfortable for either me or the client.

The therapeutic neck work and upper back techniques are so lovely. I’ve mentioned before in previous modules that I have a lot of partners that have tension and stiffness in their neck and shoulders. This module gives great techniques on how to focus on that specific area the farther we go on in the training, the more comfortable, I am with the thought of giving a specific area massage not only a general full body massage.

I am impressed how well you took to the sitting positions. They are often the ones that feel more difficult for other students. Excellent!!

"I am with the thought of giving a specific area massage not only a general full body massage."  -  This is definitely possible, and I have done just that many many times in my sessions - not just for shoulders and neck, but for other areas as well. This is actually what all our specialty therapy courses are based on - to stay on one area until there is a significant improvement.

Module, 35

Client communication

This module came at the perfect time. I haven’t really known how to start a session when I have someone coming to, mainly, I have only been saying “I’m just going to practice whatever I’ve learned” and the client seems fine with that. I am going to now begin to practice as if my friend or sibling, that I’m practicing with, are people brand new and have never had a Thai Massage. I like the idea of explaining what Thai Massage is, and how it’s different from Western massage.

I hadn’t thought about asking partners to remove jewelry. I’ve run into jewelry being in the way several times. I also like that you offer them the freedom to interrupt the session. Letting the client know that if there’s anything that they need, for example, a blanket or to use the restroom they should speak up. There’s nothing more uncomfortable than trying to relax when you need the restroom or when you feel cold. I have personally been receiving a massage and needed to use the restroom but didn’t realize that I could interrupt the session to relieve myself.

One thing I have been doing consistently is explaining to my partners, the 1 to 10 method because as you discussed in some of the very beginning modules, this is beneficial for both me and the client.
