I already experienced giving a foot massage to my partner and I put my yoga experience into the massage and the results were well received with a very relaxing massage for my partner.  I look forward to learning more about this wonderful foot massage.  I am now going to practice again on my daughter to perfect the art of the massage and the techniques while watching your video.

Hi America, welcome to our forum. It looks like you are off to a good start already. Your yoga experience will prove to be very useful for this course. You are in good company. Another woman, Kara Weimer, just started the course today, and she also has a yoga background and is practicing on her kids. She is posting as omflower.

If you ever need assistance with the course, feel free to ask in here, and I will answer normally within 1 day.

Hi Shama,

I continue practicing the Foot Thai Massage course and I have had fun trying to coordinate the techniques with rocking my body and relaxing at the same time, and finally after several times doing it, I feel like my body is more relaxed and the techniques smoothing out into a beautiful dance.

Leg Massage Topic:

I was practicing the Leg Massage on my partner, he has a back problem and it hurt him to lay flat on his back on the floor.  What do I do in this case?

If someone has a back problem, there are several things you can do:

  • It depends on where the back problem is. If the problem is a curved spine in the upper back, then putting a big pillow under the head can help
  • If the problem is in the middle back, then using a thicker, softer mat might help. Or put a soft blanket or thin pillow under the back. You can even try working on a bed instead of on a floor mat.
  • In real life the best thing for such a condition is to start working in the face down position and focus on loosening up the back first. But I realize that you cannot do that since you have not gotten to that part of the course yet.
  • Does the Chi Machine hurt your partner’s back too? Sometimes doing regular Chi Machine can be very beneficial for the back, since it is basically a gentle back massage due to the sideways rocking motion (provided you do the Chi Machine correctly which is easier said than done).
  • When I have a new client, I often do a structural analysis. I look at their body and check where the spine is out of alignment. That takes a little skill and experience to do.  But that’s the first thing to do, to find out where the problem is really located. I think I will do a video on that one of these days.
  • In some cases, when I find out that the problem comes from a bad posture due to bad habits like doing a lot of sitting work, computer work etc., I encourage my clients to correct their posture by doing certain exercises and even starting a yoga routine to add to the benefits of the massage.

For example I have clients stand straight up and then touch their toes with straight knees. If they don’t get anywhere near their toes with their hands, they have a seriously tight and probably locked up back. In such cases, I give clients ‘homework’ in the form of some exercises to get their spine to move better.

You cannot fix everything with massage alone. Often I make it clear to my clients that if they have certain life style habits which continuously reinforce the problem, then they have to do something to correct those life style habits on their own. Very few people have the time and the money to get a massage three times a week forever.

Back problems are often the result of postural problems, and those are often the result of bad life style habits. So if you want to help clients effectively, you often have to go a little further than just doing a massage. I realize that this is a little beyond the beginning of the Thai Massage course, but ultimately you will get there. I will make a special video about this.

Hi Shama, Thank you for the information about back problems, It’s been very helpful!  First I practiced the leg massage on my partner on the bed and it worked, then I tried on the carpet using a blanket under his upper back and it worked too.

Over the past few days I have worked on module 7, 8, and 9.  It is my second practice and it is not easy learning the techniques the first time through like you commented, but I will continue practicing with enthusiasm and positiveness.

Today I received module 10 and started practicing with my partner.  He commented that he liked this leg massage.
